A New Hobby During Lockdown

A New Hobby During Lockdown March 29, 20201 Comment

This is the story of my mission to find new experiences and explore places near and far from me. Along the way I will be trying to find some really good chocolate cake. And of course seek out the meaning of...well...everything

It’s madness to think that during a normal working week many people get excited about the weekend.  For some it is a great opportunity to stay home and watch TV.  There can of course be too much of a good thing as we can see from all the videos that have been circulating recently.  I decided that I would try a new hobby during lockdown. Gardening.

I should add that up until now my gardening activities have been limited and mostly focused on actives that allow me to sit in the garden.  This means mowing a lawn occasionally or cutting back some greenery.  As far as growing anything is concerned this has been limited to pot plants which were a gift.  If anyone reading this gave me a pot plant then I’m sorry it’s dead because I forgot to water it.

Perhaps I should have kept with the theme of this blog by trying to bake an awesome chocolate cake.  However due to all the moving around I have done recently I am not well equipped for baking.  Then there are challenges getting flour due to all the panic buying.  Also given that I am home alone at this time, who is going to eat all that chocolate cake?  I like chocolate cake but there are limits.

Instead I decided that my new hobby during lockdown should be gardening.  I figured it would be a good way to get some exercise and fresh air.  Also given the situation with the Covid-19 the idea of being able to grow some food makes me feel a little more secure and in control.  Last Sunday I started with some potatoes and the basil from part of a kit my friend gave me.  Yesterday I added a few more herbs from the kit my friend gave me.

As you can see I am not that organised when it comes to gardening and had to improvise with a used strawberry pot and egg cartons.  Still it has added character to my kitchen.  I planted leeks in the other egg carton and they are also on a window sill in my kitchen.

There are also some strawberry plants in my garden.  Well tiny little shoots.  I am worried that I was a bit quick to plant them.  It has got a bit colder and I am not sure if they will survive especially if we get more frost.

Actually I will consider it a bonus if any of my plants survive till harvest-time.  I have not done much  gardening although I like the idea of being able to grow my own food.  Still I can see there are other benefits to being outside in the fresh air.  Certainly I am feeling the benefits of the work I did yesterday.
